Luleå, Sweden
Partner organisation: Administration of Social Service, Lulea Municipality
Summary of Activity
O4O is working with three communities to support volunteering to help older people. The O4O project team gathered information on volunteering by working with existing organisations, such as Church organisations, charities for people with disabilities and the Red Cross. In addition, the project team conducted study visits and took part in conferences relating to voluntary sector organisations.
Pilot projects were launched in three villages within Lulea region.
The O4O project team worked with members of each community in order to bid for, and win, external funding (including from the EU Leader project) in order to set-up the O4O organisations. The O4O team helped each village to develop project objectives and an activity plan before commencing the pilot projects. The O4O project team will continue to work with the villages to develop strategies for the organisations’ long-term sustainability.

Communities
Jamton
For this community, it was important to develop activities in the village house that would enhance the village. O4O has worked with members of the local village association to develop an application for external funding for a pilot project. This application was successful and a pilot O4O is up and running. A local person has been employed to coordinate voluntary services in the village. He will also work to encourage eldery people to take part in voluntary activities to help other older people in the village with simple tasks, such as grocery deliveries.
Niemisel
Funding has been won for three years from the EU Leader project to develop the ‘Health Galleria’ project, which aims to develop support services for older people alongside a housing project. The opportunity has also arisen to take over the operation and support of a website, with support from O4O. The focus here is on activities for entrepreneurship; elderly living and voluntary services.
Sundom
A local group has identified the need for IT education and training for the elderly . The IT training began in November 2009 and will run until 2010, with the village’s younger people will take part in training the older community members. The education will give the participants skills in paying bills over Internet, communication with social network sites, using Skype, reading newspapers and other Internet related services.
